$19,000 raised for tsunami relief fund

Almost $19,000 has been raised by the community to help out with the tsunami relief work in the Pacific nations of Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga.

Manukau City Council set up a tsunami relief fund and donated $10,000 alongside the community’s $9000 which it will hand over to the Red Cross, an aid agency working in the nations affected by the devastating natural disaster.

Safe communities portfolio leader Cr Dick Quax says a big thank you to all who donated to the relief fund and those who signed the condolence books.

“These funds will go towards re-building the lives of people and the communities impacted by the Pacific tsunami.

“The council appreciates the generosity of those who were able to contribute to the fund and the kind words people wrote in the condolence books,” says Cr Quax.

The bank account has closed and the funds will be passed on to the affected nations through the Red Cross along with copies of the condolence books.
