Armistice Day remembrance service tomorrow
Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker will attend the remembrance service for Armistice Day at the Bridge of Remembrance tomorrow at 11am (11 November).
Dean Peter Beck of the Christ Church Cathedral will dedicate wreaths from the Mayor, Consular Corps, Members of Parliament, Representatives of the Services and the RSA following the observation of a two-minute silence at 11am.
Oxford Terrace from Hereford Street to Lichfield Street will be closed to vehicles for one hour for the service.
While New Zealand's national day of remembrance is Anzac Day, 25 April, services are also held throughout the country on 11 November for Armistice Day.
Armistice Day is the anniversary of the symbolic end of World War I on 11 November 1918 commemorating the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Rethondes, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning — the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month".
