Christchurch Pools Gear Up for Summer
Lifeguards from the Christchurch City Council pools began preparations for another busy summer pools season with an intensive training course at the Halswell Aquatic Centre on Sunday (8 November).
More than 40 lifeguards from the
Council’s Recreation and Sports facilities and outdoor
summer pools took part in the annual preparation course
named the Lifeguard Olympics which tests a lifeguard’s
knowledge and fitness.
The training included spinal
rescues and CPR, theory examinations and swimming relays to
test their knowledge and fitness, with the team from Jellie
Park taking top honours, beating the teams from QEII,
Pioneer, Centennial and Halswell.
The ‘Olympics’
event is a great way to get everyone on the same page
quickly for the new season, says Council Recreation and
Sport Manager John Filsell.
“It has a strong
competitive edge and offers our lifeguards a chance to
showcase what they have learnt through the National Pool
Lifeguard award scheme, as well as compete for the best
lifeguard team across our organisation.”
The
Council also provides ongoing monthly training for all pool
staff.
The summer pool season officially opens on 14
November at Jellie Park, Halswell, Waltham and Lyttelton
pools, with a special launch concert at Jellie Park
featuring a mix of local bands and have-a-go craft
activities.
