Kaitaia Police have launched a homicide inquiry after the body of a 70-year-old woman was discovered at a house in the Far North town early yesterday (Wednesday November 4) evening.
Police were called to the victim's address of 91 Matthews Avenue about 5.30pm after concerned neighbours found the deceased in her home.
Enquiries in the area reveal that a male was seen walking away from the address earlier in the day.
Later that evening Police received a call from a Matthews Avenue resident about a suspicious person on his property.
A 17-year-old male has been arrested on an unrelated matter and is being considered a person of interest to this enquiry.
Police will be talking to residents in the Matthews Avenue area over the next few days and are asking anyone with information about any suspicious activity around the victim's address or wider area to contact Kaitaia Police on 09 408 6530.
The name of the deceased has not been released as next of kin have yet to be contacted.
