Driver checkpoint catches high alcohol readings

Police say a number of motorists processed for drink driving at a Lower Hutt checkpoint on 16 October produced high alcohol readings.

Two motorists recorded evidential breath alcohol readings over twice the legal limit. One recorded 924 mcg per litre of breath while another under 20 years old recorded 396 mcg per litre of breath.

Three other drivers produced readings slightly below twice the legal limit, recording readings between 714 and 771 mcg per litre of breath.

The Traffic Alcohol Group checkpoint tested 1292 motorists in total during the evening. Police say they are disappointed that the motorists who now face prosecution chose to drive.

"Crashes resulting from drink driving can have a very traumatic effect on motorists, friends and families left behind," said Wellington District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Peter Baird.

"The number of people caught drink driving on this occasion is relatively high. We're approaching the festive season and the frequency of checkpoints will increase. People need to ensure they have a plan to get home safely if they intend to drink."

The legal limit for adult drivers is 400mcg per litre of breath and for drivers under 20 years of age, 150 mcg per litre of breath.
