Waikato Civil Defence and Emergency Management says the tsunami warning for the region's coasts has been cancelled, following advice from national agencies.
Waikato CDEM group controller Scott Fowlds asked people in coastal areas to be cautious of continuing strong currents for the rest of the day and early evening.
"We thank the public for their cooperation with this alert. Emergencies like this can develop quickly, and people need to be aware of the potential for threats at all times."
