Mayor urges support for Pacific cousins

ROTORUA 01.10.09: Rotorua mayor, Kevin Winters, is encouraging residents to dig deep for the Samoan and Tongan tsunami and earthquake victims.

Mayor Winters is asking Rotorua people to help their Pacific cousins by supporting the appeals that have been set up by Red Cross, Salvation Army, Westpac and ANZ banks.

“The tragic loss of lives and property devastation that we’ve seen as a result of the earthquake and tsunami is deeply upsetting.

“Clearly the major needs in the islands at the moment will be things that require money, such as purchasing medical supplies and building materials So I am encouraging people to give what they can to help our pacific cousins during their hour of need.

“Rotorua people have been amazing with their generosity in the past, such as the tremendous support extended to victims of the Australian bushfires

“I’m now calling on the community once again to help where we can. Every little bit helps and will go a long way toward rebuilding the lives of these unfortunate people.”

To make an automatic $20 donation to the Red Cross’ appeal, call 0900 31 100 or online at www.redcross.org.nz, or at Rotorua’s Red Cross service centre on the corner of Rangiuru St and Lake Rd.

To make a cash donation to the Salvation Army’s relief appeal, call 0800 53 00 00, or online at www.salvationarmy.org.nz, or at their Family Store on Pukuatua St; Community House food bank on Haupapa St; or at the church on Old Taupo Rd.

Westpac and ANZ bank branches are also accepting donations for tsunami victims.
