Getting ready to get through

Disaster Awareness Week - 11 to 17 October

With recent news that Wellington’s earthquake risk has been downgraded, Hutt residents might be breathing a little easier.

But Mayor David Ogden says it’s still important for families and businesses to be prepared for an emergency.

“In a disaster, there are likely to be major disruptions to communications, transport, water, and power and gas.  Whether you’re at home or at work, you need to be prepared to manage on your own without essential services for three days or more.

“With Disaster Awareness Week coming up, it’s a great time to make sure your family and workplace have an emergency plan in place and all the supplies you need to get through.

“Local retailers are making it easier for people to stock up by promoting a different survival kit item each week throughout October.”

The Mayor is encouraging kids to get involved in Disaster Awareness Week.

“By sending in a photo of how they’re prepared for an emergency at home, they can be in to win an i-pod that will be delivered to them by local emergency services.

“There’s also a great emergency services street festival happening in Upper Hutt from 10am on Wednesday 7 October.”
