Composing Or Decomposing – Do It Right

Smart composing and smart decomposing will be the focus at Hollard Gardens, Kaponga, on Sunday (27 September) final free home gardening workshop at Hollard Gardens, Kaponga.

The last of a series of five at the Taranaki Regional Council’s heritage property, the workshop will focus on companion planting and composting.

“We’ll go into the merits of companion planting, which can be a great way to discourage nasty insects and/or encourage beneficial ones,” says the Council’s Regional Gardens Manager, Greg Rine.

“There are also smarter ways of composting than throwing your weeds into a pile and waiting for them to decompose. We’ll explore different techniques for getting a quicker and better return – techniques that hinge on good timing and ingredient ratios.”

Mr Rine says the five-workshop series has been a great success, some drawing more than 100 participants.

“We’ve been thrilled by the way the community has got involved in this project, which has resulted in the creation of a new ‘home garden’ plot at Hollards. We’re looking forward to visitors checking it out over the spring and summer.”

The series is part of a full programme of free public events at Hollard Gardens and Tupare, the Taranaki Regional Council’s other heritage property. For more information, see www.hollardgardens.info and www.tupare.info .

Both properties are open daily and free to visit. From 1 October, their opening hours will be extended by three hours to 8pm.
