Draft Wanganui Visitor Strategy attracts excellent submissions - 17/09/2009
by Deputy Mayor Dot McKinnon
The Wanganui Visitor Strategy is a key focus for the Council as we look to the future. The strategy aims to improve perceptions of Wanganui and position the district as an attractive prospect for visitors, business development and enhanced lifestyle opportunities.
The draft Visitor Strategy, which was open for public feedback in August/September, is guided by four main goal statements:
1. Wanganui is an appealing place to live and visit
2. Wanganui has focused and collaborative visitor marketing
3. The Wanganui visitor industry is well integrated
4. Wanganui delivers a quality visitor experience
We invited have received 13 submissions on the draft strategy. It is very encouraging that the submitters have generally applauded the draft strategy as a comprehensive and proactive document, with an appropriate focus on collaboration. They have also provided some practical ideas, examples of best practice and partnership opportunities. I would like to thank all those who have taken the time to contribute their thoughts.
The next step is for the submissions to be considered by the Finance & Infrastructure Committee later this month, and then any amendments will be made to the document for approval by Council.
It has been a long journey to develop the strategy but I believe we will end up with a great plan to help us tell all of New Zealand that Wanganui is the place to live and visit.
Thanks to my colleagues on the Image and Promotion Working Party for helping to bring this important strategy to fruition.
A tactical marketing and promotion plan will be developed to support the strategy and achieve its aims. I am looking forward to us putting it into action in the coming months and years.
We know Wanganui is the best – let’s tell everyone else!
