Sign delivers road and traffic info faster

Mayor David Ogden is welcoming an upgrade of the changeable message sign on the Wainuiomata Hill Road that is giving road users faster and more accurate traffic information.

“Previously, the message on the sign could only be changed manually by police. Thanks to new web-based technology, the message can now be updated immediately via the internet by Council, Police or NZTA staff, in some cases by hand-held, web-enabled units.

“This means we can respond more quickly to hazardous situations and road conditions. We’ll be able to provide up to date information, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including removing the message as soon as conditions improve”

NZTA’s Regional Traffic Operations Unit is expected to be a significant user of the message sign. The unit gathers information from police, monitors the region’s traffic signals, and directs the variable message signs on the region’s state highways and local roads as far north as the Central Plateau.

The project has been completed by Lower Hutt based technology companies Commercial Signals and Digital Telemetry.
