Pacific Island culture on show at Lakefront

ROTORUA 14.09.09:

A free fun day showcasing Pacific Island cultures is happening at Rotorua’s Lakefront this week.

Mini Pasifika 2009 is being held on Saturday 19 September from 10am to 4pm at the Village Green, and features Rotorua’s Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Tokelau and Cook Islands communities.

Presented by Taro Patch Trust and radio station Niu FM, the event includes traditional Pacific Island activities and performances, including food and costume, crafts and stalls, and an ‘Island dance-off’.

Rotorua District Council (RDC) is supporting Mini Pasifika 2009.

RDC youth projects officer Jill Campbell says the council is pleased to be part of an event that celebrates the diversity that exists within our community.

“We have a growing population of Pacific Island people in the community, and many other cultures. It’s fantastic to be able to share these cultures in events such as this.

“It’s going to be a fun day for the whole family and we encourage local residents to come and be a part of it.”
