MEDIA RELEASE

Bus passenger numbers continue to climb
For immediate release:Thursday 10 September 2009

Now into its third month, the new Bay Hopper service is continuing to increase passenger numbers under the new Tauranga urban bus contract with Go Bus Transport Ltd.

Figures show that in August 2009 just over 103,700 passengers travelled on the Bay Hopper bus service.  This was an increase of over 11,000 passengers on August 2008 and 2,300 more than July 2009.

The initial figures received after the one month showed that 101,400 passengers had used the new Bay Hopper service in July 2009 compared to 81,609 the previous month in June and 96,200 one year ago in July 2008.

Environment Bay of Plenty Transport Committee Chairman Andrew von Dadelszen said he was pleased to see that numbers were climbing and people were taking to the new service.

“Our aim is to have more people taking the bus more often. With numbers telling us we’ve had 16,000 more passengers than for the first two months last financial year, we’re on our way to achieving that aim.

“We’re continuing to take on feedback from passengers, but won’t be looking to make any major route changes until the second year of the contract,” Councillor von Dadelszen said.
