INNOVATIVE STADIUM ROOF: SUBCONTRACT ANNOUNCED
The contract for supplying and installing the permanent roof for the Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza has been
awarded to Vector Foiltec, Stadium Trust Chairman Malcolm Farry announced today.
The Forsyth Barr Stadium roof will be the first ever permanent roof over a natural playing surface, using 20,558 square
metres of ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene).
The transparent ETFE panels allow sunlight onto the pitch for natural turf growth while providing protection from the
elements for spectators and players. The roofing system consists of ETFE sandwiched within an aluminium frame which is
inflated with low pressure air to provide stability and resist wind and snow loads.
The successful contractor, Vector Foiltec, invented ETFE roofing and has a track record of successful installations
around the world.
Nine of the approximately 50 construction subcontracts have now been finalised, with a combined value of just under $61
million of the total Guaranteed Maximum Price for construction of $130.4 million.
Subcontracts are approved by the Trust, based on recommendations from main contractor Hawkins Construction and
independent advice from project manager Arrow International and quantity surveyor Rawlinsons. Further subcontracts will
be confirmed as construction progresses, including the subcontracts for concrete cast on site, cladding and building
services.
Construction of the Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza began in May this year and the project is on budget and
track for completion by August 2011. Mr Farry said 320 people have been inducted to the site, and more than 600 jobs are
expected to be created during two year building process.
