26% of Aucklanders want the new Super City council to be responsible only for core services such as water, roads and rubbish collection in order to keep rates as low as possible. 67% prefer the alternate option of the Super City council also providing services such as pensioner housing, cultural festivals and initiatives to protect the environment.
The poll is the third in a series on the Auckland Super City, and covered a random selection of 240 residents across the Super City region. It follows polls on the Super City mayoralty in March and July.
The survey also looked at attitudes towards selling council assets. 85% of Aucklanders oppose selling water supply assets to private companies, while 82% oppose selling assets such as parks, libraries, and recreation/ entertainment facilities. 78% oppose transport assets such as the port and airport to private companies.
The margin of error for a 50% figure at the 95% confidence level is ±6.3%. Fieldwork was conducted from August 13-17.
