Bilingual branding for city buses

Bilingual branding for city buses

3 August 2009

Rotorua’s green urban buses will display the Cityride / Eke-Taone name when the bus service launches its bilingual branding.

The suggestion of bilingual branding of buses came from Rotorua school students at Te Kaunihera o Te Kura and was endorsed by both Rotorua District Council’s Te Arawa committee and Environment Bay of Plenty’s Maori Committee.

Environment Bay of Plenty Transport Committee Chairman Andrew von Dadelszen said the “Cityride / Eke-Taone” name was probably a better reflection of a modern Rotorua with an urban bus network carrying over half a million passengers a year.

“It’s also a great opportunity to acknowledge this in light of Maori Language Week and to be able to incorporate te reo into everyday use,” Councillor Von Dadelszen said.

Environment Bay of Plenty funds the region's bus services with the New Zealand Transport Agency.
