Wellington’s Buggy Walks scoop national award

Wellington’s Buggy Walks scoop national award

The 2009 Golden Foot National Walking Awards were held in Wellington on Friday 24th July with 14 finalists bidding for the 6 awards.

The Awards, hosted by Living Streets Aotearoa, celebrate and recognise New Zealand achievements for walkers, by acknowledging innovative facilities, highlighting national best practice and rewarding ongoing commitment to walking.

Sport Wellington’s Buggy Walks, which are run in collaboration with The Greater Wellington Regional Council, beat finalists from Tasman District Council and Craighead Diocesan School (Timaru) to take out the award for Best Small Walking Project. The Buggy Walks are now in their forth year and are an initiative designed to get parents and caregivers, with their young children, active by introducing them to the many wonderful walking tracks in the Greater Wellington Regions parks. In addition to getting people active it also provides an opportunity to meet other parents and caregivers and encourages them to start their own, more regular walking groups.

Sport Wellington’s Education Manager, Ellie Davidson, said that she hoped the award would increase the awareness of the Buggy Walks in the region and get even more people and their buggies into parks in the Greater Wellington Region.

Other notable winners of the awards were: Turanganui Riverside Walkway – Gisborne City Council (Best Practice Walking Facility) and 10,000 steps Northland – Sport Northland (Best Walking Promotion).

Buggy Walks are held on the first Thursday of every month, for more information about the Buggy Walks go to www.buggywalk.co.nz
