Lake Rd upgrade provides improved utilities for Devonport
As part of the plan to widen and improve the safety of Lake Rd, the North Shore City Council is taking the opportunity
to upgrade part of the Devonport watermain and install ducting so overhead lines can be moved underground.
The installation of the new section of watermain for Devonport is a joint North Shore City Council and Watercare
operation.
Last week, council contractors, started laying a new section of pipe for the watermain which feeds the Devonport
Peninsula in order to help future-proof the area’s water supply. A new 450mm diameter pipe will replace the current
300mm diameter water pipe and it will also be placed lower than the current pipe to ensure its protection and
reliability.
While these works are occurring, the process of laying the overhead lines underground will also begin.
These works are occurring in conjunction with the Lake Rd Stage Two upgrade between Napier Ave and Jutland Rd.
Chairman of the city’s Infrastructure and Environment Committee, Ken McKay, says the Lake Rd upgrade provides the
perfect opportunity for these works.
“As our Lake Rd works already involve digging up part of the road for widening, it makes sense we plan for the future
and minimise further disruption. The new, larger watermain will keep up with water demands for Devonport for years to
come. Also, while these works are underway we can start the process of putting the lines underground and providing the
area with aesthetic benefits.” says Cllr McKay.
The new section of watermain, which is located on the western side of the road between Napier Ave and the Hauraki corner
shops, will be commissioned at the end of September. The installation of the ducting will also be complete in September,
although moving the overhead lines underground will occur later this year.
These works are occurring behind a protective fence which is designed to reduce noise and the visual impact of the works
for residents and passers-by, as well as ensure their safety.
