Media Arts crew bring Beat Street to big screen
A group of staff, students and graduates from Wintec’s School of Media Arts are involved in Hamilton’s upcoming Beat Street event, coordinating the onscreen elements of the night. Beat Street, happening Friday, July 10th at the Meteor Theatre, is billed as a night of positive hip-hop for the whole family.
Wintec staff member and Master of Arts graduate Joe Citizen will be producing the VJ component of Beat Street, which involves video mixing 4 camera sources and 3 video sources for output to a big screen to accompany the music and performances. The resulting video is edited and presented live, which allows real-time audience participation and reaction. While this makes for an adrenaline-filled night, Joe particularly enjoys the event and has VJ-ed for it several times before.
“Beat Street is really great to be part of, because it offers very positive interaction with youth pop culture. The Media Arts students assisting with the multi-camera setup and the animation get to develop their skills in a real life situation, and also serve as role models to the wider youth community who can then see possibilities for their own arts education and career.”
Third year Media Arts (Moving Image) students Erroll Kauwhata, Michael Lawrence, Tapsell Enoka, Nane McLean and Ryan Lind will be involved in the event as camera operators and production assistants, and LG, a 2nd year Media Arts student, is doing some of the animated logo components. Maryann Tuao, another Media Arts (Moving Image) graduate is assisting with the video production also.
The primary organiser of Beat Street is Myk Rarere, a youth development worker based in Fairfield. Beat Street celebrates all elements of hip hop culture, including hip-hop dance battles where crews of 3-4 face off with live DJs, and this is the 9th year the event has been held. During the night there will also be live graffiti art and performers including PNC, David Dallas, Ngakoma (4 Corners) & DJ SMV and the current DMC Champ – DJ Impact.
Beatz Collective presents Beat Street 2009. Held at The Meteor, 1 Victoria Street, Hamilton on Friday 10th July 2009. All ages, $5 on the door.
