Light up New Year
Fire performers, dragon dances and a lantern parade will herald Matariki at the Victory Railway Reserve next week.
Coordinator Gareth Cashin says as well as marking the Maori New Year, Matariki also signals other new beginnings.
“Traditionally, Matariki was a time to prepare the land for planting crops, but the New Year is also a good time to reflect on your place in the world, to re-awaken old skills or to set new goals,” he says. “The strands flow across cultures and hosting a Matariki event brings everyone together - there are lots of volunteers involved and an event like the lantern parade encourages community development.”
The Matariki lantern parade starts at Victory Community Centre with the story of Matariki in a special performance by Victory Primary School students. Everyone is invited to join the parade along the Victory Railway Reserve to watch the fire dancers and then return by candle light to the community centre for a drumming and fire display and a light community meal.
The Matariki lantern parade is from 3.45- 8pm on Wednesday 17 June, starting at the Victory Community Centre on Totara Street. Please bring a lantern or torch and dress for the conditions. Gold coin donation. An adult must accompany all children under 8.
If you are going to attend the community meal please contact Gareth on 546 8389, email gareth@victory.school.nz < gareth@victory.school.nz > or drop in to the community centre on Totara Street.
This event is supported by Arts Council Nelson Creative Communities NZ Fund and Wakatu Incorporation.
