Arbor Day in Hamilton at Claudelands Park

Arbor Day this year will be celebrated in Hamilton on Friday 5 June, which is also World Environment Day, with a
community planting of over two and a half thousand trees at Claudelands Park.
Deputy Mayor, Pippa Mahood, Wiremu Puke (NaMTOK) and community planting coordinator Gerard Kelly are looking to mark the
occasion and increase awareness of Arbor Day at Claudelands Park as part of the development within the area.
As an Enviroschools project for World Environment Day, the whole of Hamilton East School will be there in force along
with around 35 other schools. The planting of 2600 native plants will extend the Jubilee Park bush area, enhancing the
Kahikatea stand of trees and create a transition between Jubilee Park and Claudelands Park as outlined in the
Claudelands Park Management Plan.
Gerard Kelly says the proposed developments at Claudelands Park will increase awareness of the biodiversity within the
city as well as continue to protect the city’s natural environment for the future.
“The public is very welcome to participate in the planting. Come along with suitable footwear, a sharp spade if you have
one, and join in – based from the Migrant Resource Centre car park, Boundary Road, 10am, 5 June. There will be a morning
tea after the planting.”
