‘P’ packages had no chance of reaching prisoners

Staff vigilance is being credited for yet another interception of drugs, including methamphetamine, at Mt Eden Prison yesterday.

“Staff were carrying out routine searches for contraband in an area of the prison that is not accessible by prisoners,” said Assistant Regional Manager Grace Smit.

“Two of the packages that staff picked up in the closed exercise yard contained methamphetamine, or P, with a street value believed to be nearly $4000, and a third contained a quantity of cannabis.”

Ms Smit says that this drug find is highly likely to connected to prisoners acting suspiciously last week.

“Two weeks ago prisoners in the exercise yards were challenged by staff due to their suspicious behaviour, and it was discovered they had been tampering with the edge of the metal that covers the yard. They were attempting to create a small gap through which contraband could be retrieved. The yards have since been closed for repairs meaning contraband has no chance of reaching prisoners.”

“Our security staff continue to be steadfast in their monitoring of attempts to introduce contraband items into the prison. Camera footage of this latest incident is being secured and the drugs will be handed over to Police to assist in their prosecution of those involved.”

“While there was no threat to public safety, I view any attempt to get contraband into prison as a threat to the safety and security of the site. Such behaviour will not be tolerated.”

“The Department regularly performs searches both inside the prison and on anyone entering the prison.

“We are committed to stopping contraband entering the prison. It was very pleasing that we could seize these drugs and secure evidence to pass onto Police to assist them in apprehending those involved.”
