Exciting exhibitions in Manukau to celebrate photography festival
As part of the Auckland Festival of Photography (29 May - 21 June), Manukau City Council has put together exciting events and workshops for photography enthusiasts.
Botany Library and Mangere Town Centre will be hosting eye-catching entries from the teen photo competition titled All Eyes On Manukau. Youth aged 12 to 20 years submitted photographs of their Manukau, in the hope they would challenge stereotypes and provoke comments. These entries will also be hosted on the Manukau Libraries website: www.manukau-libraries.govt.nz
Mangere Arts Centre is hosting Leaves of Light, a photogram exhibition by Isabel Sutherland. The photogram is a direct printing technique originating in the earliest days of photography. Ms Sutherland has taken the early concept of the photogram or cameraless photography and brought it up to date using current equipment and coloured photographic paper in the dark room.
At Fresh Gallery Otara, Janet Lilo presents an exploration of provocative photography that comes straight out of popular culture via the web through social networking platforms like MySpace and Bebo. Titled MyFace, the exhibition profiles photographs that provide a serious reflection on the preoccupation people have with editing their identity and self-representation.
For those interested in learning photography skills, Xavier Radic offers a digital photography workshop at Nathan Homestead. Photographic work of Mr Radic's current and former students is profiled in Our View, which represents the personal viewpoints of the students. Also at Nathan Homestead.
