Possible traffic disruption on Monday 25 for
Hikoi
22 May 2009
There may be some traffic delays in parts of the North Shore around the time of the Auckland governance Hikoi on Monday
Organisers say that the most likely area of disruption will be where participants will gather, around the Awataha Marae at 58 Akoranga Drive which is close to the intersection with College Rd.
Once the convoy moves off at around 9.15 am, the three sets of traffic lights between the Marae and the harbour bridge will be set on ‘green phase’ until the entire convoy has passed.
Organisers say that at least one bus and several vans will be provided to reduce the number of cars, and participants are also being encouraged to share vehicles.
It is impossible to estimate at this point how many North Shore people are likely to participate in the Hikoi.
Auckland City Council has also advised there is likely to be traffic disruption within the central city area. They advise that city commuters depart for work earlier than usual or travel by ferry where possible. It is also recommended that people do not drive into the central city between 9.30am and 4pm unless necessary.
Bus services could also be affected, perhaps until as late as 4pm.
The Hikoi organisers are working with the police and the council to minimise disruption.
