Ready for winter conditions?
The Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Group is advising residents in the region to prepare for winter storms following the prediction of snow at low levels and strong gales in the next few days.
“With the current forecast for snow, strong winds and very cold weather expected to hit Canterbury over the next few days people need to be prepared”, says Jon Mitchell, the Canterbury Regional Emergency Management Office Manager.
“Heavy rains have already caused significant flooding in South Canterbury in the last few days and this weather system may cause more issues,” says Mr. Mitchell. “No matter what happens with this particular storm forecast, now is a good time for people in Canterbury to prepare for emergencies,”
In the 2006 snow storm, road closures and power outages affected large parts of Canterbury.
“If we experience road closures and power cuts again this winter, people may be on their own for three days or more and they need to prepare for this. This includes having stocks of food, water, fuel, alternative lighting and other emergency supplies on hand. Also, for businesses that depend on electricity or telecommunications, having a backup generator is a very good idea,” says Mr. Mitchell.
People considering driving over the mountain passes should take chains with them in case of snow and are advised to check road conditions before setting out.
