Government reiterates councils critical for economic recovery
For immediate release on 15 May 2009
The Hon Richard Worth reiterated at the
LexisNexis 8th Annual Local Government Legal Forum today the
key role that councils have in stimulating the economy and
managing communities through the recession.
Mr Worth said that “good local government is essential for our communities, our economy and our environment”.
Mayor Kerry Prendergast, Acting President for Local Government New Zealand said she was reassured by the positive tone of the speech and the Government’s commitment to working closely with local government.
“We were pleased to see the Minister confirm the Government’s local government policy. This policy supports that there cannot be a one-size-fits-all policy for local government, supports that infrastructure is important to local economies, communities and the country; and supports a range of tools to assist local government funding issues.”
Mr Worth also recognised the impact the regulations have had on the economy and that a streamlining of regulation will reduce the burden on councils and their ratepayers.
“Our members also support and encourage the Government’s announcement that it has a role in educating the public about the linkages between rates rises, robust infrastructure and economic prosperity.
“We acknowledge that there are sometimes conflicting messages between a desire to see rates restrained and for local government to play its potential role in stimulating the economy. We look forward to working with the Government on this work.
“We have just been through the rigorous long term planning for councils and each council has had their debates in their areas. Many communities have signalled that they do want new community facilities or upgraded infrastructure and they recognise that these things come with a cost.
“We look forward to discussing these issues further with the Government at the next Central Local Government Forum.” said Ms Prendergast.
