Auckland waste contract deferred

Auckland City Council
Media release

Waste contract deferred pending further information

A decision to award a new rubbish and recycling contract for Waiheke Island has been deferred because Councillors would like to see more information and further consultation with the local community board.

The City Development Committee has asked officers to enter discussions with the soon to be established Auckland Transition Agency for regional governance over the council’s ability to award a new contract.

Legislation is currently before the House that covers the awarding of future contracts by existing councils affected by regional governance proposals.

Committee chairperson Councillor Aaron Bhatnagar said that it was vital that the council had all necessary information before making a final decision because the matter was important for the people of Waiheke and for all ratepayers.

“Tenderers and the council would be making a substantial commitment and we have to ensure the best outcome for both the island and all city ratepayers.”

Officers will report to either the City Development Committee or the Combined Committees meeting in June.
