Keen Teens On Green Mission For Region

Three environmentally minded Taranaki teens will walk the talk for the region at a national green forum later this month, alongside more than 40 others from around the country.

The Taranaki delegates to the Youth Environment Forum are Spotswood College student Anne-Marie Petty, 16, Hawera High School student Annielise Kuriger, 17, and Sacred Heart Girls College student Kate Sole, 17.

The Taranaki Regional Council ran an essay contest to find the three delegates to the Wellington forum, which starts on Sunday (19 April) and runs to 23 April. It is hosted by the Ministry for the Environment and the Sir Peter Blake Trust.

All three young women wrote about environmental challenges and possible solutions for Taranaki. Anne-Marie focused on waterways, petrochemicals and landscape management, Annielise discussed wetlands and didymo, and Kate’s essay was about pests, erosion and expanding population.

“All three have demonstrated they have a good grasp on important environmental issues for the region,” says the Chairman of the Taranaki Regional Council, David MacLeod.

“The forum will be an opportunity for them to share and discuss issues of environment and sustainability with other young leaders from around the country, with the aim of inspiring action back in their own communities.”

Forum activities will include three research projects – adapting to climate change, caring for fresh water, and environmentally responsible business. Delegates will make site visits, engage in project work and make presentations to Government officials.

The agenda also includes a visit to Te Papa and the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, and an address by the Minister of Conservation, Tim Groser.

The three Taranaki delegates will make a presentation to the Taranaki Regional Council later in the year.

Forum travel and accommodation costs are being met by the Ministry for the Environment.

• Two runners-up in the Taranaki Regional Council essay contest each receive educational material to the value of $200. They are Lucy Northwood of New Plymouth Girls’ High School and Karen Hughes of Stratford High School.
