ARC supports Government Royal Commision response

ARC supports Government’s response to Royal Commission
7 April 2009

The Auckland Regional Council is supportive of the Government’s decisions following the report of the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance.

“We are pleased that the Government has chosen to strengthen local representation and decision making by putting in place 20 to 30 local boards,” said ARC Chairman Mike Lee.

“We are also pleased that the Government has decided to go ahead with a single unitary authority, one rates bill, Long Term Council Community Plan, and District Plan.

“These decisions are reflective of the ARC’s submission to the Royal Commission as well as recent discussions with the Government on the Royal Commission’s recommendations.

“The Government’s model is much closer to the ARC’s model of a single unitary authority including up to 30 community councils – the ‘one and the many’.”

Mr Lee said the ARC is keen to continue its dialogue with the Government.

“We want to work with the Government and Establishment Board to ensure the success of the changes for Auckland and New Zealand.

“It is time everyone forgot self interest and started working together on the transition – there is a lot to do.

“Ratepayers are looking to us to take the lead and change the culture of local government in Auckland, and boost effectiveness and efficiency.

“At the same time, we have an opportunity to work together to make Auckland a better place to live in and visit.”
