City Vision Achieve Renewed Support for Waterview Tunnel Option
At Auckland City Council’s Transport Committee yesterday, City Vision-Labour Councillors pushed Citizens and Ratepayers
(C) into reaffirming their support for the tunnel option for the State Highway 20 (SH20) Waterview connection.
Western Bays Ward Councillor Graeme Easte successfully placed the matter on the agenda as an extraordinary item so that
it could be discussed and the Council’s position reaffirmed before 30 April when the Government is due to receive
recommendations arising from the review of options and costings for the SH20-Waterview Connection.
Councillor Easte said, “I am pleased that the Committee has reaffirmed its support for the SH20 tunnel option.
“This Council has consistently supported the building of twin tunnels for this connection In the face of substantial
lobbying by influential groups to change from the preferred tunnel option to a largely surface connection, it is
important that the community knows its Council is standing firmly behind them.”
Councillor Cathy Casey, councillor for Eden-Albert ward said, “It is important for the Council to continue to lobby hard
for what the local people want.
“This has been talked about for nearly a decade. The tunnel connection is the only option that has won the support of
the local community. We need now to put pressure on this new Government to meet its obligations to the people of
Avondale, Mt Roskill, Mt Albert and Waterview and ensure that the SH20 tunnel gets funded and built.”
