The YMCA Tauranga is on the move!

13 March 2009

The YMCA Tauranga is on the move!

After more than nine months of hard work and a generous loan from TECT, the YMCA Tauranga now has an unconditional contract to purchase 428 Devonport Rd and will close on the property on 20 March 2009.

For years now the YMCA Tauranga has been looking for a new, permanent home. CEO Amy Thaler explains “When I was hired a year ago, finding a suitable property to buy was a high priority as our current building, which we rent, was scheduled for demolition. The Board of Directors believe it is imperative that a legacy of this nature be established to ensure that the YMCA can provide our community support well into the future.”

For years the YMCA was housed in a prominent property on Cameron road that they leased from a benefactor at a peppercorn rate. That lease was terminated in 2003 and the Y was forced to move. “Ever since the move off Cameron Rd, the people of Tauranga have not strongly identified with the YMCA and many people think we are still there!” states Thaler.

Plans to renovate the new property are underway and the Y will be seeking strong support from the local community and businesses. “While the property has a great feel to it, we do need to do some extensive renovations to operate effectively. It will be a great project to be involved with and we are hoping to attract several local businesses to participate in exchange for some attractive sponsorship benefits.” Thaler continues “It will be a big push but we desperately want to be in the building in June. Our current building recently experienced severe flooding and we don’t want to spend another winter there. So we are going full steam ahead!”
