Dancing Minister Wants Council Partners Metered

The Local Government Minister, Rodney Hide, has supported the views of Kapiti Coast Councillors who want water meters brought in across the district, says Kapiti Independent News.

And he’s poured cold water on the ideas of the group of Kapiti Coast councillors who support water storage as long-term solution to Kapiti’s water woes.

The Minister, who struck up a dancing pose with Mayor Jenny Rowan after he entered the KCDC building today, was special guest at a Council presentation on its main infrastructure issues.

Last week Councillors attending a workshop voted in an informal poll to do a U-turn and throw out plans for meters.

Mayor Rowan and Deputy-Mayor Ann Chapman, who’d previously supported meters, abstained from the vote – which went 4-2 for the abolition of meters.

At today’s meeting, Mr Hide also resiled from a suggestion that water privatization could be on his ministerial horizons.

Most of the Councillors and the Mayor accorded the Minister an unchallenged hearing.

But Crs Lyndy McIntyre and Sandra Patton both took him to task on several points, providing the only parliamentary atmosphere in an otherwise anodyne meeting.
