One thing is certain about the rescheduling of the inaugural Child Cancer Running of the Balls competition – it won’t be rained out.

The event was to be held as part of the South Canterbury Finance Nelson Trolley Derby on Saturday, but wet weather forced its postponement.

Trolley Derby coordinator Antony Hodgson says they’ll now use the hydroslide at Tahunanui as an alternative venue for the Running of the Balls next Wednesday (March 11).

“We’ll release the balls in waves with marshals ready to capture them in a chute at the bottom of the slide,” he says. “The five winners will take home great prizes - all valued over $300 - such as family tickets to Circus Oz when it comes to Nelson later this month.”

Nelson City Council Festival Coordinator Sophie Kelly says sponsor, South Canterbury Finance has had a long association with the Child Cancer Foundation.

“$5,000 has already been raised for Child Cancer through the Smith and Son Wheelbarrow Classic, and we can now boost this further,” she says. “There are still balls available for registration and we’ll also announce the winner of the Challenge Marine kid’s design competition at this event.”

For a minimum donation of $2 you can register for a numbered ball at Everyman, South Canterbury Finance or Radio Nelson.

The Running of the Balls will be broadcast live on Classic Hits during the breakfast show at 7.45am on Wednesday 11 March.

The Child Cancer Running of the Balls competition and the South Canterbury Finance Nelson Trolley Derby are presented by the Nelson City Council as part of the Summer in Nelson programme - a celebration for locals and an added attraction for visitors.
