Heavy rain and strong wind warning

Media Release
27 February 2009

Heavy rain and strong wind warning

Aucklanders are advised to exercise caution as heavy rain and strong winds are expected across the Auckland region over the weekend.

The Metservice issued a severe weather warning for heavy rain and strong winds from early Saturday morning. This raises the possibility of localised flooding and rising rivers.

The Auckland Region Emergency Management Office is monitoring the situation and advises people to take the following simple precautions to minimise the impact of this weather.

At home:

• Check drains and spouting and clear any blockages.

• Ensure a torch, radio and spare batteries are to hand.

• Stay up to date with weather forecasts on TV, radio and the internet.

• Bring pets indoors.

• Secure rubbish bins or any other loose objects that could be a danger in strong winds.

• Report flooding to your local council.

• Limit non essential travel.

Drivers are urged to take the following precautions:

• Check Transit’s website before travelling.

• Headlights on.

• Drive to the conditions.

• Keep a safe distance from the car in front.
