Work on Wairau/Taharoto upgrade
Work to start on Wairau/Taharoto Rds upgrade Stage
Four
February 24, 2009
Work begins next week on the Stage Four upgrade of the Wairau / Taharoto Rds Corridor, which will provide additional benefits to road users travelling along this key arterial route.
Work on the $1m project will take place over the next five months, along the eastern side of Wairau /Taharoto Rds between Shakespeare Rd and Shea Tce.
Project benefits include an additional southbound general traffic lane and cycle lane, as well as a recessed bus bay. The north-bound lanes will also be resurfaced.
Contractor Fulton Hogan will carry out the work on behalf of North Shore City Council, and every effort will be made to minimise disruption. The existing two-lane flow will be maintained throughout the construction period, as will pedestrian access on both sides.
The upgrade is necessary to improve the route’s safety and efficiency, and follows on from last year’s successful upgrade to the intersection of Wairau/Shakespeare/Taharoto Rds.
North Shore City Council project engineer Stuart Meakins says Taharoto Rd is one of North Shore City’s key arterial roads - and the priority given to this upgrade reflects that.
“The area is a busy transport hub, with motorists accessing key locations such as the Northern Motorway, Smales Farm business park and Busway station, Westlake Girls High School and North Shore Hospital,” says Mr Meakins.
