Bus passenger lounge opens on Colombo Street
Footpath congestion is set to ease on Colombo Street with today’s opening of a new bus passenger waiting lounge.
The new lounge, between Star Mart and the entrance ramp to the bus exchange, complements bus stop extensions either side of Colombo Street, between Hereford and Lichfield streets.
Christchurch City Council General Manager City Environment Jane Parfitt said the new waiting lounge and bus stop extensions were necessary to extend the life of the existing bus exchange.
“More and more people are choosing to travel by bus and it is important that we ensure the existing bus exchange continues to operate effectively,” said Mrs Parfitt.
“Passengers will enjoy comfortable seating in a well-lit area and won’t need to check outside for bus arrivals and departures due to real timetable information displayed inside.”
The work has resulted in an additional bus stop each for platforms D and E.
Providing an efficient public transport system for easy inner city access is important for the revitalisation of Christchurch’s central city.
