Mental health campaign hits airwaves
The national Like Minds Like Mine mental health campaign now has a local face. Community Radio Hamilton volunteer broadcasters Aaron Woolley and Jacqualine Tauranga are set to launch the Like Minds Like Mine radio show at 1pm on Tuesday, 24th February. MPs David Bennett and Nanaia Mahuta, and Darryl Bishop from the Ministry of Health will join the co-hosts to discuss the current direction of government policy for the mental health sector.
The weekly radio show is a collaboration between mental health organisations Te Korowai Hauora O Hauraki, and Progress to Health. It aims to challenge discriminatory attitudes towards mental health, and provide inspiration for those affected by mental illness through a mix of factual information and personal testimonies.
Both hosts are passionate about their work, and travel the Waikato region; Jacqualine as a mainstream educator for Progress to Health, while Aaron provides a kaupapa Maori service for the Thames-based Te Korowai Hauora O Hauraki. Together they represent a wealth of experience and knowledge that they hope to share with a wider audience.
“We’re both experts in mental illness through first-hand experience,” explains Jacqualine. “We want to show that you come back from this and hold down full-time work. What can be more challenging than walking the talk?” This is an opinion backed by Community Radio Hamilton’s general manager Phil Grey. “Real people discussing real issues – it’s the essence of Access radio and we’re proud to have them on board,” he says.
The Like Minds Like Mine show will offer a holistic approach to recovery from mental illness, and guests will be encouraged to share their own stories through word, poetry, and song.
To listen to the Like Minds Like Mine radio programme tune in live every week on Community Radio Hamilton (106.7FM, 1206AM, and online). On-demand podcasts are also available at www.communityradio.co.nz.
