Celebrate the summer days in the cool Tararua forest
If you know where to look you can see some fascinating native species in your local forest - native orchids, rare mistletoe, and an ancient native worm called peripatus to mention a few.
This February the Department of Conservation is offering people the chance are offering two guided nature walks from Holdsworth road-end in the Tararua Forest Park.
The walks are being hosted by Chris Peterson and he will escort the group up to Donnelly’s Flat identifying various local flora and fauna. Suitable for all ages and all fitness levels families are encouraged to come and see the forest through new eyes.
DOC Community relations programme manager Amanda Cosgrove said occasions to look around the Tararua Forest Park with an expert are rare and people should take the opportunity.
“Response about the event is excellent and we are looking forward to showing people what’s there that they may normally overlook.
Spending time out in the bush walking with your family is a great way to observe natives and learning to identify them helps the forest come alive.’
Please meet Chris by the DOC flags at Holdsworth Roadend at 1pm on Sunday 15 and 22 February. Wear sensible walking shoes, bring sunscreen and water. There is no charge for this event.
