Free road safety event for international students
February 9, 2009
On Friday February 20 hundreds of international students from around the Shore will come together at Windsor Park for a fun and free day of activities aimed at honing their road safety skills.
The event covers off several critical areas, including the affects of alcohol on youth, the importance of wearing a safety belt, Personal Safety, learning to drive to conditions, road rules in New Zealand, Auckland public transport information, as well as safety tips for pedestrians and cyclists.
With more than 2000 international students coming to North Shore City each year, many unfamiliar with New Zealand road rules, the event is a great way to help our visiting students become more confident and safe on our roads.
North Shore City’s group manager of transport strategy and planning, Archer Davis, says the event is a great way to get the safety message across in a fun interactive way.
“Students certainly have a lot of fun with the hands-on activities and demonstrations on offer.
“The fatal vision demonstration teaches students about the effects of alcohol on their driving, and is always very popular,” he says.
The event is supported by the Brain Injury Association, ACC, NZDDA, the NZ Police, the NZ Ministry of Education and North Shore City Council.
All attendees will receive a free goody bag loaded with information and giveaways, and enjoy a traditional kiwi sausage sizzle.
The event is being held at 550 East Coast Rd (behind KFC) with two sessions, 9.30am -12pm and 1pm to 3.30pm.
This event is for international students only. If you need more information, please contact North Shore City Council’s road safety co-ordinator Angie Cheong on 486 8600, ext 8715.
