Former chairman will be sadly missed

For immediate release: 29 January 2009

Former Environment Bay of Plenty Chairman John Keaney has died suddenly aged 77.

Mr Keaney held the position of Chairman of Environment Bay of Plenty from 1995 to 2001 and was known for his practical and determined approach towards regional issues.

He came to Environment Bay of Plenty with the experience of being Rotorua’s first district mayor where he played a pivotal role in the development of the district.

Present Environment Bay of Plenty Chairman John Cronin served with Mr Keaney and said he was always well respected amongst both colleagues and the community.

“Our condolences go out to Judy and his family who provided his greatest support throughout his career. He was a very strong leader who was able to focus on the practical side of politics and was determined to see results.

During his time with Environment Bay of Plenty, Mr Keaney saw the setup of the asset management plans for the river schemes, worked through the recovery of the 1998 floods and introduced the Environmental Enhancement Fund to the region in 2000 which has seen the Bay of Plenty benefit from a number of successful community projects.

“One of his greatest achievements was overseeing the development and introduction of New Zealand’s first and only Maori constituency seats. He was highly respected among the community and commanded respect from European and Maori alike. He knew people and people knew him.

“His passion for people and experience in local government will be sadly missed,” Chairman Cronin said.
