Back on the train after extensive works to improve rail network
Commuter rail and freight services in Auckland will resume their regular timetable as of Monday 19th January, following a three week shut down of large sections of the rail network to allow major construction.
Pedestrians, motorists and commuters, are all being reminded to watch out for trains particularly on the rail line between Newmarket and Helensville, and obey all warning alarms at level crossings, now trains are back on the network.
Eastern line passengers are reminded that extra services that were in operation from 5-9 and 12-16 January will cease as the normal timetable resumes.
Over the past month people may have got used to there being no trains, warns ONTRACK Northern Regional Manager Stephen Collett.
"It's timely to remind people to pay heed to the warning bells and signs - if the alarms are still going it means another train is coming, so don't cross until they stop and you're sure it is safe to do so."
"Trains take a long time to stop and cannot swerve to avoid people or vehicles. Road users should be prepared to stop every time they approach a level crossing and must obey the warning signs."
Two pedestrians were killed when they were struck by trains at level crossings in Auckland last year.
Mark Lambert, ARTA's General Manager Customer Services says "ARTA and ONTRACK planned the three week window over the quieter Christmas period to enable an uninterrupted period of work on the rail network."
"During this time significant progress that is essential to delivering a higher frequency of services, electrification and better facilities for passengers at stations has been made."
"Together with ONTRACK we sincerely thank everyone for their patience while the work has been going on."
