Jet skiers are being reminded to keep a good lookout for swimmers following recent incidents involving the watercraft this summer.
Environment Bay of Plenty’s Regional Harbour Master Carl Magazinovic said jet skiers needed to remember to use their common sense when out on the water.
“It’s important that even if you’re in a jet ski zone, you realise that there still could be people who decide to swim in that area,” Mr Magazinovic said. “You must keep a very good look out for obstacles of any sort, from people to logs, wherever you are.”
Mr Magazinovic said it was a jet skier’s responsibility to be careful on the water and keep a close look out as they would often find people where they least expected them.
He was also reminding jet skiers to watch their speed when they were close to shore.
“If you’re within 200 metres of the shore, or 50 metres from other boats, swimmers or divers you need to keep your speed to five knots – about the same as a brisk walking pace,” Mr Magazinovic said.
