A search and rescue was launched in Central Police District last night (Saturday, December 27) after a report of a red flare sighting off Waitarere Beach.
The sighting was reported about 11.10pm and four police search and rescue officers were joined by two Coastguard vessels from Foxton. The Air Force (3 Squadron) also joined the search with an Iroquois helicopter and night vision, and the Philips Trust Search and Rescue fixed wing plane from Taupo used radar and infra-red.
The team searched all night standing down at 5.45am. No one has been reported missing and there are no unattended boat trailers. Without further information and having exhausted all possibilities the search and rescue has been suspended.
