Wellington on a ‘Mission’ for World’s Biggest Canned Christmas Tree
Wellington City Mission is creating a Christmas tree of a different kind this year, with the Wattie’s World’s Biggest Canned Christmas Tree.
This novel concept will see 5,000 cans available to be placed on a custom-built ‘tree’. Members of the public are invited to visit the tree in Midlands Park, Lambton Quay on Friday 12 December. Just bring a gold coin donation to receive a can to place on the tree.
All cans then go to the City Mission’s Christmas food parcels, and the donations from the public help out the Mission at this very busy time of year.
Wellington City Mission spokesperson, Dan Boyd, says the tree will bring something special to Lambton Quay as Wellingtonians can witness a world record attempt in the making while doing their part to help those in need.
“We’re inviting everyone in the area to come along on Friday 12 December to make a donation and add their can to the tree. It’s going to be a great day – and night – with lots of music and activities taking place, and prizes to be won too! Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast will be there at 8am to get the festivities going and to place her can of food on the tree.”
Iconic New Zealand brand, Wattie’s, has donated the 5,000 cans for the project and Studio Pacific Architecture and Fletcher Construction were behind the design and creation of the Christmas tree.
Mike Pretty, Wattie’s Director of Marketing, says being involved with the world record breaking attempt is very special, but is even more meaningful given the purpose of the event.
“While Christmas is a time for us to relax with family and friends, it can also be very stressful for many people as increased demands on household budgets can put a strain on the holiday season.
“Wattie’s is pleased to assist in supplying goods for the City Mission food banks at a time when we should all be looking to how we can help others in need.”
