Active transport – you can do it!

MEDIA RELEASE 2 December 2008

Active transport – you can do it!

Ever thought about ditching your car and biking or walking to work?

Toi Te Ora – Public Health is launching an Active Transport campaign to encourage people to incorporate exercise on their way to work.

“It’s a great way to start the day,” says Regional Manager Graeme Savage. “The Bay of Plenty and Lakes districts have many different bike routes and walkways; it’s just a question of knowing where they are and being organised.”

He says research shows many people would like to bike or walk to work but feel there are too many obstacles in their way.

“Taking up a new healthy habit is about being organised and planning ahead, but it’s also about having easy access to information and support to keep you motivated.”

People are encouraged to sign up to receive eight weekly emails with motivational advice and practical support to help them get started with biking or walking to work.

The email series, which starts in January, includes solutions for people who live far away, have low fitness levels or are complete beginners. Those who already walk or bike to work will receive practical advice on how to build a workplace environment that supports others to walk and bike to work easily and regularly.

Toi Te Ora – Public Health Health Promoter Rebecca Drummond says it’s important to stay motivated but not to put too much pressure on yourself and build up your fitness gradually.

“I try to walk or bike at least part of my journey each day, but some days I need to run errands so will take my car. If I have to travel to a meeting during the day, I’ll take the bus there and walk back or use the office bike. Often by the time you’ve driven and found somewhere to park, the bike is just as quick.”
