Man injured after falling down steep bank

Man injured after falling down steep bank

The Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter transferred a seriously injured man from Upper Hutt earlier this morning.

Police and Wellington Free Ambulance were called to River Road in Upper Hutt where a 27 year old man was seriously injured after rolling down a steep bank, approximately 10 metres high, and landing on a concrete road below.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with two Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics on board, was called to the scene because the man is possibly suffering from a spinal injury. The helicopter landed on St Hwy 2 (River Road), near the Mangaroa Road intersection.

"As we understand it the man was walking home and fell down the bank when he was attempting to find a short cut" says Westpac Rescue Helicopter Crewman Dave Greenberg. "Apparently he rolled down the bank and then ended up with a two metre fall to the ground below".

The man was flown to Wellington Hospital around 3 am. He is currently being assessed and treated for multiple injuries in the Emergency Department.
