ARC congratulates John Key and new Government

9 November 2008

ARC Chairman Mike Lee today sent his congratulations to John Key, Prime Minister-elect of New Zealand, on his great personal achievement in the elections yesterday.

“On behalf of the Auckland Regional Council, I would like to offer you and the National Government our best wishes and support, and our commitment to work with you in the best interests of Auckland and New Zealand.

“We are especially keen to collaborate with the Government on progressing the construction of Auckland transport infrastructure in the most, speedy, cost-effective way possible, and also to work with you on enhancing the enormous economic potential for tourism here in Auckland.

“On these issues in particular we have a number of work streams in place and ideas we would like to share with you.”

Mr Lee said the National Party and the ARC share quite similar views on the need for major structural reform of local government in Auckland.

“Pending the release of the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance, we look forward to working with the National/Act government on speedily implementing reforms in this area.

“I also recognise and share your concerns about the need to cut waste and inefficiency from government (especially in regard to the work of the Royal Commission and local government) and to make it more transparent and accountable to the people it is meant to serve.

“Finally the ARC and Auckland Regional Transport Authority are working on options for the purchase of electric rolling stock for Auckland and we look forward to briefing you and your colleagues on this matter in particular, and other issues of regional/central government interest, at your earliest convenience.

“Once again, congratulations and best wishes at achieving the highest office in the country.”
