Council takes 10-year plan on-line

Improving accessibility and active participation lies at the heart of the Manukau City Council’s move to put its Long Term Council Community Plan (10-year plan) on-line.

On Monday 10 November www.tellusyourmanukau.govt.nz, the next stage of the new website dedicated to the 10-year plan, goes live.

Director strategy Grant Taylor says on-line access to the 10-year plan is a necessity if people are to be able to take an active part in their city’s development.

“The city belongs to the people of Manukau, so their active participation in planning its development is essential if it’s to reflect what residents want,” Mr Taylor says.

“This is your opportunity to have an active part to play in your city, just by logging on and having a say.

“Previously, we’ve relied on people going to their library and getting a print copy, or downloading a PDF of the draft plan once it’s been developed, then making formal submissions.

“Through the website, people can put forward their informal comments on what they think is important for the city’s development before we develop the draft plan.

“In these uncertain economic times, this type of participation is essential. The council has already felt a downturn in revenue as a result of the recession and this will have an impact on how we stage our work, so setting priorities takes on an even greater importance.

“Residents’ informal feedback into our planning now will help us decide those priorities for the next 10 years and beyond,” Mr Taylor says.

People will also be able to provide feedback through more traditional means, with forms available from libraries, Manukau Leisure Services facilities, and the Customer Centre at Kotuku House.

Formal consultation on the draft plan will take place next April.
