Creative chit chat at Manukau's Pecha Kucha night

The amazing Pecha Kucha, Japanese for "chit chat", is coming to Manukau city on Saturday 15 November 2008.

Taking the "lecture" out of a lecture series, Pecha Kucha is a rapid-fire presentation format in which 14 outspoken creative-types are limited to the 20 x 20 Pecha Kucha rule. This means each speaker is allowed just 20 slide images; each slide is shown for 20 seconds, resulting in a fresh and fun six minute and 40 second presentation.

There is no restriction on the type of content that can be presented so audiences should be prepared for an evening packed with surprises from Manukau's creative scene.

The Genesis Energy Theatre doors will be open from 7pm for people to enjoy a drink at the bar and the sounds of a live DJ before the Pecha Kucha session starts promptly at 8.20pm.

Manager of Manukau Arts Leisa Siteine says:

"Pecha Kucha is a fun night out, a mix of the old-fashioned slide show and public lecture. It's a great chance for the audience to experience an exhilarating variety of ideas and projects."

Entry is by door sales only on the night and at just $5 is excellent value, especially for people interested in the arts scene.

More information on Pecha Kucha

Pecha Kucha was originally devised in 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Tokyo's Klein-Dythan Architects as a place for young designers to network and show their work in public. The idea is to keep presentations concise, the interest level up and to share a range of ideas within the course of one night. Presenters are usually from the design, architecture, photography, art and creative fields but speakers from academia and the business world also take part. The format has spread to over 140 cities across the world, including London, San Francisco, Seattle, Rotterdam, Shanghai, Rio and Berlin.

Last year, Pecha Kucha Night was voted Best Inspirational Event in the Metro 2007 Best of Auckland awards.

Manukau audiences will have the pleasure of hearing from musicians DJ Gene Rivers, Matthew Salapu and Coco Solid, architects Andrew Tu'inukuafe and Rewi Thompson, photographers Serena Stevenson and Raymond Sagapolutele, architecture graduate Charmaine Ilaiu, artists Jeremy Leatinuu and Janet Lilo, ta moko artist Turumakina Duley and curator Ema Tavola. They will be joined by a guest presenter visiting from the United States, Paulen Candeago.

Internationally, well-known presenters have included architects Rem Koolhaus and Toyo Ito, designers such as Tom Dixon and Ron Arad, comedian Johnny Vegas, actress Joanna Lumley and BBC newscaster Jon Snow.

About the festival:

The Manukau Festival of Arts 08 is an inaugural event for audiences of all ages and backgrounds from around the Auckland region to experience the energy of the arts in Manukau through a diverse range of exciting festival events.
