Road closures
across city for Targa Rally tomorrow
The
spectacular Targa New Zealand Road Rally is coming to town
tomorrow (Saturday 1 November) and high-powered cars,
hundreds of participants and support crew are expected in
Wellington over the weekend.
The rally set out from
Auckland last Monday and arrives here in the Capital after a
tough week of racing down the North Island. The final two
special stages of the rally – through Ohariu Valley and
Makara and then from Shelly Bay to Scorching Bay – take
place tomorrow afternoon.
There will be a carnival
atmosphere with music and live commentary on Taranaki Street
Wharf as the rally finishes on late Saturday afternoon.
Wellingtonians are invited to come down to the wharf to give
the drivers a warm welcome as they cross the finishing line
- the first drivers are expected around 4.45pm.
A
number of roads will be closed on Saturday afternoon to
accommodate the rally:
Takarau Gorge Road will be
closed between 2.45pm and 6.45pm from the intersection with
Ohariu Valley Road and Rifle Range Road to the intersection
with Makara Road. This includes the intersection with Makara
Road (no exit).
Makara Road will be closed between
2.45pm and 6.45pm from the intersection with Takarau Gorge
Road to the top of the Makara Hill near Karori. This
includes 100m of each adjoining road, from where it
intersects with the road being closed.
Shelly Bay
Road and Massey Road will be closed between 3.30pm and
7.30pm from the intersection with Miramar Avenue to
Scorching Bay
Domain.
